new centre sandow – between old cottbus and ostsee

In my final design paper I undertook the project in Cottbus. Sandow is a modern urban district of Cottbus and Cottbus is one of the important cities in Brandenburg, east Germany. Because of its good travel connections, proximity to the old city centre and open spaces along the river Spree, it is a very popular residential dirstrict. The old soft coal opencast mining pit east of Cottbus shall be flooded and in 2025 a lake will arise.The new landform “Ostsee“. Sandow will function as a connector between Ostsee and the old city centre. It is essential to work out a new urban centre for Sandow as well as a good travel connection through „Seeachse“ to the new lake. Thematised new parks in the quarters cater for urban coherence. Developed Islands emerge along the river and extraordinary places near the bridges. Tree alleys highlight the important axis in Cottbus. The existent buildings were to be treated carefully. The development of heterogenic forms creates caesura, reference points and landmarks. It is crucial for the inner and outer identity formation of the district.

In meiner Diplomarbeit habe ich mich mit dem Cottbuser Ortsteil Sandow beschäftigt. Cottbus ist einer der wichtigsten Großstädte Brandenburgs. Sandow ist ein moderner Stadtteil, der durch seine gute Verkehrsanbindung, die Nähe zur Altstadt und durch innerstädtische Freiräume an der Spree ein beliebtes Wohnquartier. Im Zuge der Flutung des Tagebaus Cottbus-Ost wird im Jahre 2025 der “Ostsee” und somit ein neuer Landschaftsraum entstehen. Sandow wird hierbei als Bindeglied zwischen dem Ostsee und der Innenstadt fungieren. Hierfür ist es essenziell, eine städtebauliche Mitte in Sandow herauszuarbeiten, sowie für eine gute Anbindung der Altstadt an den Ostsee über die Seeachse zu sorgen.Thematisierte Grüne Mitten in den einzelnen Quartiersteilen sorgen für eine städtebauliche Kohärenz. Es entstehen Wohninseln entlang der Spree, sowie besondere Brückensituationen. Ausgehend vom Zentrum heben Baumalleen die wichtigen Achsen Cottbus hervor. Mit dem Bestand musste sorgfältig umgegangen werden. Die Entwicklung von Heterotopen schafft Ruhe-, Bezugs- und Orientierungspunkte, ist aber auch entscheidend bei der Identitätsstiftung des Stadtteils nach innen und außen.
