space for architects

Owing to the success of TU Dresden in the “Excellence Initiative” for German universities, the architecture department lost its anticipated new location in the Fritz Foerster Building, which was rededicated to house the university administration instead. Remaining in the currently used office building (BZW) does not solve space constraints in the department. A new concept for an adequate relocation are imperative. A school of architecture must also find architectural expression within the ensemble of the university campus. This task also offers the chance to improve the spatial situation on the campus and at the same time turn the urban space close to the main square into an attractive address. A key issue was how studios, classrooms and labs, as well as places of communication, should be conceived as environments that foster teaching and research in architecture today and in the future. The new building represents the Faculty of Architecture not only on the campus but also in the city of Dresden. It creates an inspiring atmosphere to study architecture in an appropriate spatial setting. Working in both small and large studio spaces, individually and in teams, with feedback from teachers and peers is an essential part of our architectural education. The building has different heights to create an outdoor area for students and teachers and to have a certain distance to the neighbour buildings. It is possible to enjoy the historic and detailed facade of the building “Beyer- Bau” from the roof deck. The studios and ateliers are very open and light flooded. The first two levels can be used by any student or teacher who would like to use the work- or copy shop, have lunch in the cafeteria or to marvel at the exhibition of the architecture students. The building offers private studios for students in their own party of the building. A park is located right next to the new faculty building which creates a nice atmosphere.
